doublethink

Applied to an opponent, it means the habit of impudently claiming that black is white, in contradiction of the plain facts. Applied to a Party member, it means a loyal willingness to say that black is white when Party discipline demands this. But it means also the ability to believe that black is white, and more, to know that black is white, and to forget that one has ever believed the contrary. This demands a continuous alteration of the past, made possible by the system of thought which really embraces all the rest, and which is known as doublethink.

“We cannot change the hearts of these people of the South, but we can make war so terrible and make them so sick of war that generations will pass away before they will again appeal to it.”

William Tecumseh Sherman

"You go to war with the Army you have, not the Army you might like to have."

Donald Rumsfeld

"There have been tyrants and murderers and for a time they seem invincible but in the end, they always fall -- think of it, ALWAYS."

- Gandhi

"We should crush in it's infancy, the moneyed aristocracy which seeks to challenge our very government to a trial of strength" - Thomas Jefferson

"The most effectual engines for [pacifying a nation] are the public papers... [A despotic] government always [keeps] a kind of standing army of newswriters who, without any regard to truth or to what should be like truth, [invent] and put into the papers whatever might serve the ministers. This suffices with the mass of the people who have no means of distinguishing the false from the true paragraphs of a newspaper." --Thomas Jefferson to G. K. van Hogendorp, Oct. 13, 1785.
